The cover for Panashe Chigumadzi’s second publication These Bones Will Rise Again from United Kingdom based publisher Indigo Press has been revealed.
In October 2017, a new publisher called Indigo Press was launched to publish fiction and creative non-fiction to bring together a conversation-starting curation of books from all over the world. They announced that they would be publishing their launch titles in summer/autumn 2018.
The publishing director of the new outfit would be Ellah Wakatama Allfrey who is one of the most influential figures in African writing. She sits on the board of anything that you know about and has been on the panel of judges for many literary prizes. The former senior editor at Jonathan Cape and former deputy editor of Granta magazine, would lead with commissioning of books.
The cover for the first of these titles promised has emerged as Panashe Chigumadzi’s publication These Bones Will Rise Again. We all remember Chigumadzi, who was born in Zimbabwe and grew up in South Africa, for her first novel Sweet Medicine. That novel about Tsitsi who has to survive in the harsh world of mid noughties Harare Zimbabwe that we really rated would go on to win the K Sello Duiker Prize.
Chigumadzi’s work has also featured in titles such as The New York Times (USA), The Washington Post (USA), Transition (USA), The Guardian (UK), City Press (SA), The Sunday Times (SA) and Die Ziet (Germany).
Chigumadzi in an interview with the Johannesburg Review of Books says the new offering is a reflection on Robert Mugabe’s ouster through the spirits of anti-colonial heroine Mbuya Nehanda and my late grandmother Mbuya Lilian Chigumadzi.’ You want to read the whole interview here.
If These Bones Will Rise Again, out in June, is anything like previous Chigumadzi work, then we are all in for a treat.
