Podcast episode 20: Maaza Mengiste and Antje Rávik Strubel

This week’s podcast, repurposed from the livestream done on Thursday, November 12 featuring Maaza Mengiste and Antje Rávik Strubel. Mengiste is the Ethiopian-American author of Beneath the Lion’s Gaze, selected by the Guardian as one of the 10 best contemporary African books; and The Shadow King, one of New York Times’ Notable Books of 2019 and TIME’s 100 Must-Read Books of 2019. Her work can be found in The New Yorker, New York Review of Books, Granta, the Guardian, the New York Times, Rolling Stone, and BBC, among other places. The Shadow King has been shortlisted for the Booker Prize 2020.

Antje Rávik Strubel published the novels Offene Blende (2001), Unter Schnee (2001), Fremd Gehen. Ein Nachtstück (2002), Tupolew 134 (2004), Vom Dorf. Adventure Stories for the Festival (2007). Her work has been honored with numerous prizes, her novel Kältere Schichten der Luft (2007) was nominated for the Prize of the Leipzig Book Fair and was awarded the Rheingau Literature Prize and the Hermann Hesse Prize, the novel Sturz der Tage in die Nacht (2011) was on the long list of the German Book Prize. In 2019 she received the Prize of the Literature Houses. Most recently, the episode novel In den Wäldern des menschlichen Herzens was published in 2016.

Livestream episode 4: Mariette Tchamda Mbunpi and Annette Michael

There was a Livestream that was hosted this past Wednesday, November 25, featuring Mariette Tchamda Mbunpi and Annette Michael. Mariette Tchamda is a Cameroonian publisher. A former independent translator and French teacher, she studied English and French Language and literature in Yaoundé I University.  Her journey in publishing started 2 years ago when she created Nuances, a publishing house which only publishes books written by women, with women as leading characters. In August 2020, she released the first and only book of Nuances: “Être femme est un métier à plein temps” (English: Being a woman is a full-time job) by Koutoukoute.

Annette Michael is the publisher and managing director of Orlanda Verlag a publishing house in Berlin, Germany founded in 2017. Orlanda focuses on the topics of feminism, world culture and migration and aims to provide a platform for the discourse for a more positive and fair development of the world – regardless of ethnicities, gender and skin colour. For many years Orlanda has been publishing books of female Black German writers. In 2019 the publishing house started a series of African Literature.
