Premio Gregor von Rezzori 2025 longlist announced

Abigail Assor, Teju Cole, and Ferdia Lennon are on the Premio Gregor von Rezzori 2025 longlist announced on Wednesday, April 16, 2025.

Gregor von Rezzori was a novelist, memoirist, screenwriter, and author of radio plays, actor, journalist, visual artist, art critic, and art collector. He passed away in 1998, and his widow, Beatrice Monti della Corte, who chairs the Santa Maddalena Foundation, conceived the Premio Gregor von Rezzori (the Gregor von Rezzori Prize in English) in his honour. The prize awards the best work of foreign fiction translated into Italian and published in the preceding year. It is supported by the municipality of the City of Florence and is promoted by the MiBACT Center for Books and Reading and sponsored by the Tuscany Region. Some previous winners have been Hisham Matar, Jhumpa Lahiri, Maylis de Kerangal, and Maaza Mengiste.

The 2025 jury is comprised of Beatrice Monti della Corte, who is President, alongside Andrea Bajani, Alberto Manguel, Maylisde Kerangal, Colm Toibin, and 2021 winner Maaza Mengiste. On Wednesday, they announced the longlist, which featured the following writers of African descent;

  • Ricco quanto il re, Abigail Assor, translated by Annalisa Romani, published by Marsilio Editori
  • Tremore, Teju Cole, translated by Gioia Guerzoni, published by Einaudi Editore
  • Eroi senza gloria,Ferdia Lennon, translated by Valentina Daniele, published by NN Editore

The winners will be announced in Florence, Italy, from June 10 – 13, 2025.
