Prémio Literário Carlos Morgado 2023 finalists announced.

The finalists for Mozambique’s Prémio Literário Carlos Morgado 2023 were announced in Maputo on Friday, June 30, 2023.

Carlos Morgado was born in Tete City, Mozambique on July 9, 1946, and lived a full life starting with being part of the independence struggle of the Southern African country. On independence in 1975, he played roles in the airline industry and hospitality as well as politics going as far as being the minister of trade and industry. Until his death on February 15, 2007, he served as Chairman of the Board of Directors of Grupo Pestana in Mozambique.

The Carlos Morgado Foundation has been running initiatives in health, education, sports, and other areas of sustainable development in his honour. The latest of these is Prémio Literário Carlos Morgado (English: Carlos Morgado Literary Prize) in conjunction with Catalogus, a platform for Mozambican authors. It was created with the aim of discovering and projecting new voices from Mozambican literature in the short story genre. It is aimed at Mozambican citizens residing in and outside the country aged no more than 35 years with no published work, including authors who have articles published in newspapers, magazines, websites, blogs, digital or printed anthologies.

The first edition is judged by the president Dr Marina Morgado, widow of the Prize’s patron and Editor of Carlos Morgado’s poetry collection, Poemetria alongside author Suleiman Cassamo, and translator and editor Sandra Tamele. The first finalists were revealed on Friday and those in the running are;

  • Alcio Antonio Fausto Cuna
  • Cleyde Henrique Maoze Pamela
  • Felizarda Armando Nhare
  • Francisco Panguana Junior
  • Gilberto Nasson Macuacua
  • Isaura Fausto Matebule
  • Luciano Orlando Manhique
  • Wasquete Jasse Fernando
  • Zacarias Antonio Jose Simbo.

The winner will be revealed at a ceremony at the Central Library of the Pedagogical University of Maputo on Friday, July 7. The winner receives a cash prize of 50,000.00 MT (Fifty Thousand Meticais)
