The semi-finalists for Mozambique’s Prémio Literário Carlos Morgado 2023 were announced in Maputo on Friday, May 31, 2024.
Carlos Morgado was born in Tete City, Mozambique on July 9, 1946, and lived a full life starting with the independence struggle of the Southern African country. After independence, he played roles in the airline industry and hospitality as well as politics going as far as being minister of trade and industry. Until his death on February 15, 2007, he served as Chairman of the Board of Directors of Grupo Pestana.
The Carlos Morgado Foundation has been running initiatives in health, education, sports, and other areas of sustainable development in his honour. The latest of these is Prémio Literário Carlos Morgado (English: Carlos Morgado Literary Prize) in conjunction with Catalogus, a platform for Mozambican authors. It was created to discover and project new voices from Mozambican literature in the short story genre. It is aimed at Mozambican citizens residing in and outside the country aged no more than 35 years with no published work, including authors who have articles published in newspapers, magazines, websites, blogs, digital or printed anthologies. The first winner was Francisco Panguana Júnior.
The jury for 2024 is comprised of writer Virgília Ferrão, writer and theatre professional Rogério Manjate, and Marina Morgado the widow of Carlos Morgado. The regional team on the jury are Hélder Faife (south), Dany Wambire (centre), and Marieta Namakoma (north). They announced the semi-finalists for the second edition on Friday with the following in the running;
