Salon du Livre Féminin de Dakar 2024 starts December 20

Salon du Livre Féminin de Dakar 2024 with the theme “Literature, Exile and the Quest for Identity” will be held in Dakar, Senegal from December 20 – 22, 2024.

Salon du Livre Féminin de Dakar (English: Dakar Women’s Book Fair) centering books and ideas that express the vision of African women, Senegalese women in particular was first hosted in 2022. It comprised three days of meetings, discussions, and exchanges between different disciplines of art and culture (painting, cinema, dance, music), exhibitions, conferences, activities, and more. That edition had Marietou Mbaye (Ken Bugul) as its patron with a focus on the works of Aminata Sophie Dieye (Ndeye Takhawalu) and Khady Sylla. The literary festival initiated by Les Cultur’Elles under the direction of Amina Seck had a sophomore edition in 2023.

The 2024 edition with the theme “Literature, Exile and the Quest for Identity” and guest country Côte d’Ivoire will be hosted in the West African nation’s capital from Friday, December 20. The guest of honour will be sociologist and feminist Dr. Fatou Sow, a specialist in gender dynamics in African cultures who has distinguished herself through a critical approach to social sciences and a major contribution to gender studies on the continent. She is scheduled to give a keynote address on Saturday, December 21.

Other guests will be novelists, screenwriters, filmmakers, feminists, actors, activists, academics, journalists, and other professionals from the host country Senegal, and many other nations. They include Aïssatou Touré, Arame Ndiaye, Rokhaya Ngaido, Mame Diarra Fall, Marieme Pollele Dieng, Madjiguene Kane (Maggy), Maria Sissokho, Mamyto Nakamura, Fatou Ndiaye (Zahraty), Laity Ndiaye, Diary Sow, Ndeye Fatou Kane, Ndeye Fatou Mboup, Assita Sidibé, Paule Kadja Traore, Hami Traoré, Gina N.F. Goudiaby, Selbe Diouf alias Sister LB, Diariatou G.B. Mbow, Kine Helene Niang, Oumy Ndiaye, Selly Ba, Coumba Touré, Adama Pouye, Fatoumata Bernadette Sonko, Angèle Diabang, Fama Reyane Sow, Soeur Martha Seck, Aicha Demé, Emmanuelle Djé Lou, Nania Koulibali, Djeneba Siby G, and Fatou Diomandé. These guests will participate in panels, book readings and conversations, book signings, film screenings, and more.

One of the highlights will be Prix des Lycéens du Premier Livre Féminin and Prix Ken Bugul du Livre which will be announced at the opening ceremony.
