Scholastique Mukasonga’s The Barefoot Woman is on the longlist for the Baillie Gifford Prize 2022 announced on September 22, 2022.
The Baillie Gifford Prize rewards excellence in non-fiction writing, bringing the best in intelligent reflection on the world to new readers. The award, founded in 1999 as the Samuel Johnson Prize, covers all non-fiction in the areas of current affairs, history, politics, science, sport, travel, biography, autobiography, and the arts. Some of the previous winners have been Craig Brown, Hallie Rubenhold, Serhii Plokhii, and David France.
The judging panel this year is chaired by writer and Associate Editor of The Bookseller Caroline Sanderson alongside writer and science journalist Laura Spinney, critic, and writer for The Observer Rachel Cooke, BBC journalist and presenter Clive Myrie, the author and New Yorker writer Samanth Subramanian, and the critic and broadcaster Georgina Godwin. They announced the longlist for the prize which included Scholastique Mukasonga’s The Barefoot Woman.
Caroline Sanderson, chair of judges, said: “It was a fiendishly difficult, but also highly enjoyable process by which my fellow judges and I arrived at the final 12 books in contention for the 2022 Baillie Gifford Prize. I’m delighted with our longlist which shows off non-fiction in all its splendid breadth, depth and scope; from outstanding reportage, and compelling memoir to illuminating history books and mind-expanding popular science. And perhaps most importantly, all 12 books have been written with the experience of the reader firmly in mind.”
Scholastique Mukasonga shared the news on social media saying, “I’m delighted to announce that my book The Barefoot Woman @dauntbookspub translated by Jordan Stump has been longlisted for the @bgprize 2022.”
The shortlist will be announced on October 10 and the winner of the 2022 prize will be announced on November 17. The winner will receive £50,000 and each of the shortlisted authors will receive £1,000.
