Short Story Day Africa is seeking submissions from writers on the continent on the theme “Disruption.”
Short Story Day Africa, coming out of a South African base, is an initiative that recognises writers all over Africa. They help to increase the skills set of African writers with workshops across the continent and other mentoring opportunities. It also has a coveted annual prize which has been won previously by Tochukwu Emmanuel Okafor (2017), Sibongile Fisher (2016), Cat Hellisen (2015), Diane Awerbuck (2014), and Okwiri Oduor (2013).
Short Story Day Africa has made a call for submissions for the 2019 edition with the theme “Disruption” with the following brief;
disruption [noun] Disturbance or problems which interrupt an event, activity, or process.
disruptive Innovation [business theory] a process by which a product or service takes root initially in simple applications at the bottom of a market and then relentlessly moves up market, eventually displacing established competitors.
Floods. Wildfires. Oceans of plastic. Chemical rivers. Melting ice caps. The polar vortex. Storms during the dry season. Extreme heat. Drought. The climate is changing, the environment becoming ever more hostile in humanity’s hands.
We’re in the throes of inner and social maelstroms, caught up in the ever-growing warning quakes of social media activism and rising floods of anxiety. Torn between our dependence on fossil fuels and the desire to create sustainable tech with the power to save us.
We want your stories of change, protest, destruction, adaptation, disruption and [re]creation. Stories that explore how changing climates affect us, our adaptations to the environment, and the innovations that bring us hope.
In 2019, Short Story Day Africa is seeking short fiction exploring disruption, especially but not limited to climate and environ[mental] disruption.
The prizes for the winners are $800 for first prize, $200 for second prize, and $100 for third prize.
Your deadline is October 31, 2019.
