“The Short Story is Dead, Long Live the Short Story!” announces shortlist

The shortlist for “The Short Story is Dead, Long Live the Short Story!” competition has been announced.

The Short Story is Dead, Long Live The Short Story! is a competition set up by South African based Black Letter Media which involves a short story call out and prize followed by an anthology. The first edition which came out in 2012 was edited by Duduzile Zamantungwa Mabaso and featured writers like Lauri Kubuitsile (Botswana), Chiaka Obasi (Nigeria), Tebogo Ndlovu (Zimbabwe), Emmanuel Ogukwe (Nigeria), Sitawa Namwalie (Kenya), and Obinna Udenwe (Nigeria). The second edition featured writers like Obinna Udenwe (first prize winner), Mapule Mohulatsi (joint second prize winner), and Christine Coates (joint second prize winner).

In August, the longlist for the prize was announced and it featured 19 of some of the best talent coming out of the continent right now. The organisers of the competition have announced the shortlist of those in the running for this year’s edition. This shortlist features writers from East, South and West Africa which isn’t very common where these prizes are concerned. The full list of winners is;

  • Rudo by Eliza Mabungu (South Africa)
  • The Scent of Living Wills by Michel Tumuhimbise (Uganda)
  • Tanganyika ABCs by Tina Chiwashira (Zimbabwe)
  • Petrichor by Osemegbe Aito (Nigeria)
  • Firewater by Mary Ononokpono (Nigeria)
  • Eye Color by Mwikali Mutune (Kenya)

The winning short story will receive R5 000, and the second and third runner-up stories will receive R1 500 and R500 respectively. The winners will be announced at a launch of The Short Story is Dead, Long Live the Short Story (Vol. 3) in late 2017.
