Sisonke Msimang is on the Multiculturalism New South Wales 2019 Award shortlist for her memoir Always Another Country.
The Multicultural New South Wales (NSW) Award is given out in Australian province of New South Wales for a book, play, music drama, and screenplay. For the work to qualify it has to be deemed by judges to have made a significant contribution to Australian literature, poetry, theatre, film, radio or television and any aspect of the Australian migration experience; and/or aspects of cultural diversity and multiculturalism in Australian society.
This year the award has a name that is familiar to followers of African literature as Sisonke Msimang has been shortlisted for her 2017 memoir Always Another Country. In this book, the South African writes about her exile childhood in Zambia, Kenya, and Canada, her college years in the USA, and returning to South Africa in the 1990s.
The winner of the award will be announced later in the year at a ceremony in Sydney with the winner going home with $20,000.
