Sitawa Namwalie and Athieno are the featured artists for Artistic Encounters at the Goethe-Institut in Nairobi on September 25, 2019. Their show will be followed by a Q&A moderated by book blogger James Murua.
In Artistic Encounters, two artists of different genres meet and create an art experience of their combined work then share it with the audience at the Goethe-Institut in Nairobi. In the last three years, Nairobi audiences have experienced shows by artists from Kenya, Uganda, Nigeria, Botswana, Germany, South Africa, Malawi, Zimbabwe, Eritrea, and Sierra Leone. Some of the artists have been Victor Ehikhamenor, Koleka Putuma, Christine Kamau, Philipp Khabo Koepsell, Lola Shoneyin, Maimouna Jallow, Angela Makholwa, Patricia Kihoro, Pede Hollist, Hana Kefela, Prudence Katomeni, Adipo Sidang’, Niq Mhlongo, Nick Ndeda, Ngartia, Olumide Popoola, Dami Ajayi, Makadem, Sitawa Namwalie, Yewande Omotoso, Shan Bartley, Shadreck Chikoti, Abu Sense, Kagayi Peter, Chris Adwar, Ngwatilo Mawiyoo, and Tomeletso Sereetsi.
The artists to feature in the September edition of the series are Sitawa Namwalie and Athieno. Sitawa Namwalie is an award-winning poet, playwright, writer, and performer. She is the writer of the poetry collection Cut Off My Tongue (2009), as well as the dramatized poetry, shows Silence is a Woman and Homecoming. You can read some of her poetry here. Athieno is a performing singer/songwriter, pianist, music producer and audio engineer who has fused her musical influences in R&B, Jazz, Funk, Hip-Hop, Gospel and African music into her African-infused urban music. You can watch a sample of one of her performances below;
The two will perform a combined show at the Goethe Institut before sitting for a session moderated by James Murua. Audience members, who can also ask questions of the artists, can buy their books and music and have them signed.
The show begins at 6pm.
