The program for Soma Nami Books’ African Book Fair 2024, to be hosted in Nairobi, Kenya from August 6 – 11, 2024 is now public.
The African Book Fair 2023 was first brought to the Kenyan public when it was hosted at the MacMillan Library, Nairobi last year. The main draw was the moniker “Kenya’s Biggest Book Sale” where readers could buy thousands of books from across the continent. Organised by a team at the Muthoni Muiruri and Wendy Njoroge-founded Soma Nami Books, it had panels, readings, and activities for adults, children, and teenagers. With an attendance of over 5,000, a huge number for a new festival, we were certain of a reprise in the future.
The sophomore edition is set to return to the MacMillan in August to “engage in meaningful discussions, exchange ideas, and celebrate the power of storytelling.” It promises to be bigger and better with over 10,000 books from 54 African countries on sale.
The program with book chats, panel discussions, master classes, and a dedicated program for children is now available. It will have participation from writers, poets, and other professionals from across the continent. They include among others Sitawa Namwalie, Nepurko Keiwua, Lilly Bekele-Piper, Wangari Grace, Tifanny Kagure, Makena Ireri, Jessica Horn, Kenanao Phele, Keikantse Phele, Mwihaki Muraguri, Jackie Asiimwe, Cynthia Mwangi, Balmoi Abe, Mercy Ndiritu, Joan Mero, Sophie Kiriba, Faarah Nur, Wairimu Njuguna, Flower Akaliza, Kui Kabala, Olivia Ambani, Michael Onsando, Melissa Mbugua, Rix Poet, Joan Thatiah, Emmanuel Muinde, and Faith Masambia. The masterclasses will be conducted by Dorcas Wangira, Muthoni Muiruri, and Wendy Njoroge
