South African Literary Awards founder Sindiswa Seakhoa has passed away.

Poet, musician, and South African Literary Awards founder Sindiswa Seakhoa passed away on Thursday, February 10, 2022.

Sindiswa Seakhoa was a South African poet and musician whose greatest achievement was the foundation of the South African Literary Awards or the SALAs. The SALAs, founded in 2005, “pays tribute to South African writers who have distinguished themselves as ground-breaking producers and creators of literature” and celebrate “literary excellence in the depiction and sharing of South Africa’s histories, value systems, philosophies, and art.” The awards were and are a production of wRite associates in partnership with the South African Department of Arts and Culture.

Sindiswa Seakhoa’s husband and business partner Morake “Raks” Seakhoa said to South African publication The Daily Sunthat she was sick for a month.

“She started having shortness of breath and was taken to hospital. They put her on an oxygen treatment for eight days and that cleared. She didn’t have Covid-19. She then had this condition we cannot talk about for now and was in hospital for a month,” he said.

Sindiswa Seakhoa will be laid to rest on Thursday morning and the service will be held at Rhema Church in Randburg, Johannesburg.
