Thando Mgqolozana’s Epic Easter Facebook Status

It was an epic Good Friday from some folks. Thando Mgqolozana, author of A Man Who is Not a Man, Hear Me Alone and Un-importance, posted a status about his days as a meat eater slowly coming to an end. Here is the full status;

It has taken a lot of effort from me to eat meat lately. I cannot quite put off the idea that this is flesh, same thing I’m made of, and with all the cheating going on in the food industry, it could easily be human flesh. And then, of course, there’s the violence of slaughtering to consider; and this comes from a village boy who trapped birds for fun, hunted for game, and slaughtered sheep and shikens. Two days ago I had to run to the bathroom and puke, disgusted by the shiken breasts I was spicing, and yesterday I pushed aside the mutton in the mutton curry and only ate the rice and gravy. I’ve been a vegetarian before, I guess my days as a meat – eater are once again numbered.”

A pretty basic status that one. What happened next however, has to count as one of the most epic threads to do with literature and puns to do with food ever. It all started when Diane Awerbuck suggested a title for his next book seeing as he was leaving meat with the post, “Next book in the offing. Provisional title: Sacrifice.” Other readers and writers decided to give hilarious book titles with food links which ended up in the hundreds (and counting). The most liked of the comments was Thando Mgqolozana himself with 12 likes for his “Strange Fruit (I’m not joking, Helen Moffett).” He was closely following with ten likes were Diane Awerbuck’s suggested “Long Walk to Treedom” and Eusebius Mckaiser with “The Quiet Violence Of Braais by Thando Mgqolozana.”

Below you can find the who conversation that lasted hours with the kind permission of the folks who were playing. The magic starts about 13 posts into the conversation. Enjoy.

Ronel de Swardt You won’t be joing us at the “health shop”!

Lungile Mtshiliba I think you should be a Rastafarian chief…

Thando Mgqolozana I’ll come with you, Mike, for great company, but out of my mouth will be running commentary on why none of us should be there.

I’ve only been there once since you left.

My number one comment, if you want to know, is Khanyo O. Mjamba‘s Inyama, My Children. My greatest players tonight being Eusebius Mckaiser, Zukiswa Wanner, James Murua, Kagiso El Em, Helen Moffett, and Pumla Dineo Gqola.

But Diane Awerbuck started the whole thing. And she happens to be the author of Home Remedies, and GARDENING AT NIGHT. Go figure.
