The Ukamaka Olisakwe-founded Isele Magazine makes its debut.

Isele Magazine, a new magazine founded by Ukamaka Olisakwe, makes its debut today July 30, 2020.

Ukamaka Olisakwe first came to the attention of the continental writing community when she was listed among the thirty nine writers under the age of 40 likely to make their mark in the future, the Africa39, in 2014. She is the writer of Eyes of a Goddess (2012) and Ogadinma Or, Everything Will be All Right (2020). Her work has also appeared in Olisa.tv, Saraba, Sentinel Nigeria, Short Story Day Africa, The New York Times and various other publications.

The Vermont-based Nigerian is the founder of a new publication called Isele Magazine. The new magazine plans to publish writers and artists who hold the mirror to our society, who challenge conventional expectations about ways of being, how to be, and who decides who should be. It will be a monthly web magazine, a quarterly guest-edited magazine, a yearly print magazine, and a weekly blog that’ll keep up with the peripheral conversations within and outside of our literary circles.

The first issue of the magazine launching today features work by Caine Prize Award-winning writer, E.C. Osondu, Nigeria Prize for Literature Award-winning writer, Chika Unigwe; Director of the Vermont College of Fine Arts, Professor Rita Banerjee; Vermont-based Award-winning poet Bianca Stone; Nigeria’s outstanding poet, Logan February; Google collaborator and foremost linguist, Kola Tubosun; among others.
