Time of The Writer 2025 with the theme “Imagination, Freedom & Accountability” runs in Durban, South Africa from March 18 – 23, 2025.
Time of the Writer is a literary festival organised by the University of KwaZulu-Natal’s Centre for Creative Arts, in Durban, South Africa. Usually held in March, it has featured some of the most iconic names in African and world writing since the first edition in 1996.
The 2025 edition, which is the twenty-eighth, is curated by South African author, sociologist, and podcaster Shafinaaz Hassim with assistance from Thalente Ndlovu, Nomthandazo Shandu, Andisa Mpisi, and others in an all-woman team. Some of the featured guests shared on the festival’s social media handles include John Van De Ruit, Nobantu Shabangu, Smangaliso Mkhuma, Annabel Nyongwana, Joshua Ward, Bruce Little, Lorato Trok, Prof Pamela Maseko, Karen Jennings, Alistair Mackay, Nqobile Sawula, Nomvuyo Mzamane, Dr Themba Qwabe, Nokuthula Khumalo, Khumbulani Mngadi, Londeka Ntshangase, Dr. Phindile Dlamini, Londiwe Mtshali, Pebofatso Mokoena, Dr. Muhle Sibisi, Prof. Nobuhle Hlongwa, David Africa, Philiswa Lila, Dr. Thulani Mkhize, Fouad Asfour, Marina Auer, Rachel Kongolo, and Prof. VVO Mkhize.
As in previous editions, Durban residents will be treated to panels, readings of prose and poetry, book launches, visits to schools and disadvantaged neighbourhoods, and loads more.
