Tsitsi Dangarembga, Thandi Sebe to wrap up Artistic Encounters in 2019 on November 27.

Tsitsi Dangarembga and Thandi Sebe are the last artists of the year to feature in the 2019 Artistic Encounters series at the Goethe-Institut Nairobi on November 27.

In 2017, South African author and publisher Zukiswa Wanner created the Artistic Encounters series hosted at the Goethe-Institut in Nairobi. In the series, two artists of different genres meet and create an art experience of their combined work then share it with the audience at the German Cultural Centre. Since then, Nairobi audiences have experienced shows by artists from Kenya, Uganda, Nigeria, Botswana, Germany, South Africa, Malawi, Zimbabwe, Eritrea, and Sierra Leone.

The series has a history of actors dramatizing work by novelists and bringing them to life on stage like Maimouna Jallow performing Lola Shoneyin’s The Secret Lives of Baba Segi’s Wives; Patricia Kihoro presenting Angela Makholwa’s The Blessed Girl; Hana Kefela with her adaptation of Pede Hollist’s So the Path Does Not Die, Ngartia with his interpretation of Olumide Popoola’s When We Speak of Nothing; Sitawa Namwalie and Shan Bartley doing Yewande Omotoso’s The Woman Next Door; and Abu Sense doing his rendition of Shadreck Chikoti’s Azotus The Kingdom.

This month follows in that tradition as German actress Thandi Sebe takes on one of the books by Zimbabwe author Tsitsi Dangarembga. Tsitsi Dangarembga is not a new name in the African literary scene having authored the Tambudzai trilogy of Nervous Conditions (1988), The Book of Not (2006), and This Mournable Body (2018). She is also a filmmaker of note writing Neria (1993), and directing Everyone’s Child (1996), and Growing Stronger (2005).

Thandi Sebe is an actress and director, known for 6-Headed Shark Attack (2018), Empire of the Sharks (2017) and Disgrace (2008). The trained actor has also done work on stage, and on TV. Check out her acting showreel below.
