Wana Wa Magere, a comic from a team led by Salim Busuru and Nur Cherubi, launched at the Alliance Française, Nairobi on Saturday, July 29, 2023.
Wana Wa Magere, is a new comic from a team led by Salim Busuru and Nur Cherubi, that was published by Avandu Studios. The new publication comes with the blurb, “When youth start disappearing in town, descendants of the great Luanda Magere, Neema, and Jawar begin to investigate the matter when asked by their grandmother, whose friend’s grandson has gone missing. On their journey to uncover the cause of the disappearance, they discover that they must use an ancient lost artefact in order to find a solution to the evil that has befallen their community.” You can get a copy of the book here.

The new publication was introduced to the public at an event moderated by Msanii Kimani Wa Wanjiru, the author of Ink & Pixels: The Wild and Wondrous Tales of Kenyan Comics at the Alliance Française this past Saturday. Sharing on their work were the comic creators Salim Busuru and Nur Cherubi as well as their project managers Elizabeth Wanjiku on the business and craft of producing the work. Also speaking at the event were British Council’s Dyonis Ndungu and Eric Onyango.
There was a full house at the venue with comic enthusiasts of all ages and a group of students from Highway Secondary School. The afternoon ended with a long line of audience members lining up to get their signed copies of the book.
P.S. A publication that has a shadowy criminal cultural organisation in Kenya. Sounds like Kinyanjui Kombani’s Den of Inequities.
