Writing Africa: Archiving African and Black Literature

Wendy Njoroge to head new Narrative Landscape Press East Africa

Wendy Njoroge is set to head the newly constituted Narrative Landscape Press East Africa.

In 2017, doctor-turned-writer and publisher Eghosa Imasuen and editor Anwuli Ojogwu set up Narrative Landscape Press in Lagos, Nigeria. The new outfit promised new fiction, poetry, and nonfiction from talented writers in their country and they went on to do just that. Over the last seven years, we have seen titles from among others Zeal Akaraiwe, Efe Farinre, Ayisha Osori, Nkiru Olumide-Ojo, Amaka Chika-Mbonu, Obari Gomba, Kunle Shittu, Obii Okwelume, Báyọ̀ Olúpohùndà, and Lawrence Amaeshi. They even signed Olusegun Obasanjo and became Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie’s Nigerian publisher. Apart from publishing they have been involved in projects like the Canex Book Factory.

Today, the publisher announced an expansion east by opening a Nairobi Kenya-based Narrative Landscape Press in East Africa. The new outfit is committed to amplifying authentic African voices and providing a world-class platform for storytelling. They promise readers in that part of the continent an exciting lineup of books, including powerful fiction, insightful non-fiction, and imaginative children’s stories reflecting the diversity and richness of the East African experience.

“Narrative Landscape Press was built on a vision to tell authentic African stories, and this expansion into East Africa is our way of honoring that legacy,” said Eghosa Imasuen, co-founder of Narrative Landscape Press. The managing director and co-founder, Anwuli Ojogwu added, “We are excited to collaborate with the region’s talented writers, enriching the literary landscape and creating a home for stories that resonate locally and globally.”

The new outfit will be headed by Wendy Njoroge who, with a history in distribution and community building, is not a new name in the East African literary scene. After a stint at Text Book Centre, she and a friend set up Soma Nami Books, a leading distributor of books in Nairobi with branches on Ngong Road and in Ngara. The Soma Nami team has given Kenya’s capital city the African Book Fair which platforms writing from across the continent. She is also the founder and curator of Books & Wine, a community of books and wine enthusiasts who explore and discover wines and literary works in an inclusive community setting.
Njoroge said on the new initiative, “This is a new dawn for storytelling in East Africa. We are committed to providing a platform where stories from this region can thrive and reach audiences far and wide. To authors and storytellers, we invite you to partner with us on this exciting journey. Our stories, told our way, are ready to change the world.”

In addition to identifying, nurturing, and publishing remarkable works of fiction, non-fiction, and children’s writing by East African authors, Narrative Landscape Press East Africa will offer its publishing services to organisations and individuals to produce high-quality publications tailored to their specific needs under its publishing services imprint, Prima.
