Wole Talabi andR.S.A Garcia are finalists for the Nebula Awards 2024 were announced on Thursday. March 14, 2024.
The Nebula Awards, recognising the best works of science fiction or fantasy published in the United States, were first held in 1966. They are organized and awarded by the Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of America, a non-profit association of professional science fiction and fantasy writers annually. Some winners of the awards in the past have been Octavia E. Butler, Nnedi Okorafor, Tomi Adeyemi, and P. Djèlí Clark. P. Djèlí Clark and Oghenechovwe Donald Ekpeki won in 2022 while C.L. Polk and K. Tempest Bradford won in their categories in 2023.
For 2024, the Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers Association announced the finalists for the Nebula Awards in a variety of categories on Thursday. Here are the writers of African descent in the running;
Nebula Award for Novel
- Shigidi and the Brass Head of Obalufon, Wole Talabi (DAW, Gollancz)
Nebula Award for Novelette
- Saturday’s Song, (Lightspeed 5/23)
Nebula Award for Short Story
- “Tantie Merle and the Farmhand 4200, R.S.A Garcia (Uncanny 7-8/23)
Wole Talabi said, “I’m incredibly happy & humbled that two of my stories are Nebula award finalists! SHIGIDI AND THE BRASS HEAD OF OBALUFON (best novel) & SATURDAY’S SONG (best novelette). Wow. To be nominated in 2 categories is surreal. Thanks everyone. And congratulations to my fellow finalists!”

The winners will be announced at the Nebula Conference 2024 which runs in Pasadena, USA from June 6 – 9, 2024.
