The writers, poets, and others who will feature at the Gaborone Book Festival 2021, which runs from September 16-18, started being announced on September 10, 2021.
The Gaborone Book Festival, founded by Keikantse Phele and Kenanao Phele, first ran in the Southern African country of Botswana in 2018. The event, which also run in 2019 and 2020, was aimed at fostering a love for reading among Batswana and residents of Botswana. It has hosted many writers and poets from Botswana and across the continent. They include TJ Dema, Lola Shoneyin, Pumla Dineo Gqola, Niq Mhlongo, Helon Habila, Zukiswa Wanner, Lauri Kubuitsile, Michael Dingake, Andrew Sesinyi, Ednah Rosen, Onica Lenkutwane, Bakang Baloi, Nelson Letswene, Abigail Mwikisa, Odafe Atogun, Lerato Mogoatlhe, PJ Mofokeng and Siya Khumalo.
On August 26, the team organising the festival announced that it would be happening virtually from September 16-18. Starting on September 10, they started to reveal the writers and poets who will feature in the festival later in the month. These include Lorato Trok an early literacy consultant and expert in developing reading for pleasure books for young children especially in African languages. Also on the roster is writer and an academic Dr Zaheera Jina Asvat; writer and artist Shubnum Khan; writer and researcher Nanjala Nyabola; writer and investment analyst Sue Nyathi; writer and Write Me Free Founder Botho Lejowa; pan African, intersectional feminist, human rights defender, and writer Tshepo Moyo. Others to feature are Thuto L Ramasankate, Mabu Nteta, Nompumelelo Mqwebu, Shudufhadzo Musida, Prof Thapelo J. Otlogetswe, and Kojo Baffoe.
