The Writivism initiative made a call out for the 2018 edition of the fiction and creative non-fiction prizes on January 17, 2018. They also announced the individuals who will be judging entries.
The Writivism initiative has two prizes that they offer to entrants which are the Writivism Short Story Prize which is for fiction and the Koffi Addo Prize for creative non-fiction. The fiction prize has been handed out since 2012 with the following winners Munachim Amah (2017), Acan Innocent (2016), Pemi Aguda (2015), Saaleha Idrees Bamjee (2014), and Anthea Paelo (2013).
The Koffi Addo Prize for creative non-fiction is newer and was only born in 2016 and has had two winners in Charles King (2017) and S.Y Tetteh (2016). The prize is sponsored by the Koffi Addo family, through MAKEDA.
The 2018 cycle of the prize is upon us and those who want to be in the running have been given the dates that they will need to keep in mind. They are;
March 31: Deadline for receiving submissions
June: Longlists announced
July: Shortlists announced
August 17 – 19: Winner announced at the annual Writivism Festival
The judges for this year’s prize have also been announced thus you who have entering get to know who shall be judging the wheat from the chaff.
The short story prize panel will be chaired by Shadreck Chikoti, a writer, publisher and representative of the Story Club of Malawi, who are sponsoring the prize. Chikoti will be joined by Beatrice Lamwaka, an award-winning Ugandan short story writer and Emmanuel Sigauke, a writer, editor, and longstanding member of the Writivism Council of advisors.
The Koffi Addo prize for creative non-fiction panel will be chaired by Akwaeke Emezi, a novelist and memoirist. Emezi is the winner of the Commonwealth Prize 2017 African region and has one of the most anticipated novels of 2018. She will be joined by Daniel Kalinaki, a journalist, biographer and CEO of Nation Media Group (Uganda) and Sumayya Lee, a novelist, editor and longstanding member of the Writivism Council of advisors.
