Joseph Bokea

Young Kenyan writer Joseph Bokea debuts at Goethe Nairobi

We have the newest kid writer in town and his name is Joseph Bokea. Bokea wrote his debut novel Magic a fantasy fiction novel when he was a mere eleven years old. With his entry into the fantasy fiction arena, we finally have the next generation of fantasy fictionistas to join the likes of Nnedi Okorafor.

The book Magic is about twelve-year-old Joe who does not know if he’s human or not. His is a world of wizards, green people, and magic. In a world where a lack of identity is seen as a threat to the species, Joe must decide whether he is human or alien.

The new book which has been published by Storymoja Publishers, proving that they don’t only organise highly regarded literary festivals and break world records, was launched at the Goethe Institut in Nairobi on Saturday afternoon. It was a colourful affair with publisher Muthoni Garland, Senator Anyang’ Nyong’o famous nowadays as the father of an Oscar winner, Mshai Mwangola the chair of the Kenya Cultural Centre and Kenya National Theatre, singer Anto Neosoul and many kids who are the target audience for the book.

Here are some images from the book launch courtesy of our friends at the Goethe Institut.
