Zambian poet and writer Luka Mwango has passed on.

Luka Mwango has passed on. The Zambian was a performance poet signed to Bittersweet Poetry Zambia, the author of Twisted and Perdition, and a novice screen-writer.

Luka Mwango first came to the attention of this blog in March 2018 when he was one of the delegates to the Time of the Writer in Durban South Africa. He had been invited to the literary do on the strength of his two books Twisted and Perdition. He would introduce himself to this new audience as a storyteller; you can listen to his speech below.

Apart from his work in prose Mwango was well known in Lusaka poetry circles for his poetry, especially for the performances where he was signed to Bittersweet Poetry Zambia. The most well-known of his poems Dear Future Wife peaked at number one on indie South African music site Bozza.com and was featured on the first ever African poetry Mixtape. He was also nominated for Best Spoken Word at Zee Music Creative Awards.

The writer collapsed on September and passed on on September 17, 2018.

National Arts Council of Zambia director Adrian Chipindi said the arts fraternity was saddened at the death of Luka. “At 27, Luka has left a legacy which will live on, his passion for poetry and writing will be greatly admired by many,” Chipindi said.
