Zukiswa Wanner and Niq Mhlongo are two of those who have been selected for The Johannesburg Institute for Advanced Study 2018 Writing Fellowships.
The Johannesburg Institute for Advanced Study is a joint initiative of the University of Johannesburg, South Africa, and Nanyang Technological University, Singapore. Launched in May 2015, JIAS aims to create the conditions in which scholars can deliver cutting-edge interdisciplinary thought and research at the highest academic level. The institute is based in a dedicated facility in the Johannesburg surburb of Westdene, near the University of Johannesburg. It offers accommodation for fellows and other visiting scholars, as well conference and workshop facilities.
Since the fellowships were introduced, some of those who have taken part that are familiar to followers of African literature are Fred Khumalo, Desiree Lewis, Yewande Omotoso, Kole Omotoso, and Maya Wegerif.
The next batch of The Johannesburg Institute for Advanced Study 2018 Writing Fellowships has announced its third intake of 11 Writing Fellows for its four-month Writing Term that will run from January to April 2018. These were selected from more than 300 applicants, the Writing Fellows include outstanding authors, journalists, and scholars in various disciplines from Africa and Asia. The list includes authors Zukiswa Wanner and Niq Mhlongo as well as nine other fellows.
Writing Fellows will have access to live-in suites at the JIAS complex in Westdene, Johannesburg, where they will enjoy a quiet space for work and reflection, and participate in academic community-building.
