African Book Festival Berlin 2023

African Book Festival Berlin 2023 guests announced.

The artists taking part in the African Book Festival Berlin 2023 running in the German capital from August 25 – 27 were revealed on Thursday, June 22, 2023.

The African Book Festival Berlin has been happening in the German city since 2018. Apart from the two Covid years, the festival has run to much success with many new markets for African writers being introduced. Check out our previous coverage of the festival by clicking here.

The 2023 edition had a few challenges starting with announcing a curator who had to be disinvited over controversies that were out of the hands of InterKontinental, the organisers. In spite of these trials, the team has continued with a “the show must go on” attitude.

On Thursday, InterKontinental announced the artists who would take part in the events at the festival at the Alte Münze in Berlin. They come from writing, music, politics, acting, academia, and many other disciplines. Some of the countries represented at the festival include host Germany as well as the USA, Kenya, Nigeria, Switzerland, South Africa, Rwanda, Zimbabwe, Scotland, Cote D’Ivoire, Ghana, and Sudan.

The full list of guests includes Abdelaziz Baraka Sakin, Acèle Nadale, Adelle Nqeto, Alexandra Antwi-Boasiako, Bibiana Malay, Bisi Adjapon, C. A. Davids, Celia Parbey, Disnay López, Edwige-Renée Dro, Fabienne Mahwane Gretschel, Fiston Mwanza Mujila, Fred Khumalo, Georgiana Banita, Haji Jabir, Jeannine Kantara, John Goetz, Jörg Petzold, Khadija Abdalla Bajaber, Laila Lalami, Max Lobe, Leila Aboulela, Moses Leo, Niq Mhlongo, Özgür Özvatan, Rani Selvarajah, Souad Lamroubal, Tendai T.L. Huchu, Tete Loeper, and Tsepo Kolitsoe Pooe.

This year’s event is brought to you with the partners and sponsors Haupt Stadt Kultur Fonds, Afrikanische Perspektiven E.V., Heinrich Böll Stiftung, and Rosa-Luxemburg-Stiftung.
