The Jinja International Poetry Festival 2025, with the theme “Create: The First Step to Freedom,” will be held in Jinja, Uganda, from September 26 – 28, 2025.
In 2024, Ugandan poet, editor, scriptwriter, and actor Muganza Keith founded the Jinja International Poetry Festival to celebrate the poetry from one of Western Uganda’s largest cities and further afield. Hosted in October, performers and attendees alike gathered to explore identity, heritage, and the deep roots of oral tradition. Through storytelling, music, performance, and conversation, the event celebrated the richness of African poetic heritage while offering a platform for emerging and established voices.
The festival returns with the theme “Create: The First Step to Freedom” to the town at the source of the River Nile this weekend. There will be Stage Performances, Cultural Poetry Nights, Workshops and Masterclasses, a Youth & Student Poetry Field Day, Poetry Grand Slam & Awards, Creative Zones, a Wellness Corner, and Publishing & Book Exchange.
Some of the performers over the three days will be Zenora, DiReality, Nze Tana, Pretty Sue, Elizabeth Opiyo, Stanza Mmoki, Patience James, Keith Mugeni, Tory Bird, Mordakay, Bishop, Mstaphar, Devis the Poet, and The Goons.
