LOATAD Announces Black Atlantic Residency Fellows 2026

The Library of Africa and the African Diaspora (LOATAD) announced the fellows selected for its 2026 Black Atlantic Residency on Tuesday, November 25, 2025.

Founded in 2023 by Sylvia Arthur, LOATAD is a private library, archive, museum, and writing residency dedicated to the works of African and Diaspora writers from the late 19th century onward. It serves as a vital hub for the writing community in Ghana and across the African continent.

The Black Atlantic Residency, launched in 2024, aims to bridge connections between writers from Africa and its Diaspora by bringing them together around a shared theme and purpose.

A jury comprising writer-translator Edwige-Renée Dro (Côte d’Ivoire), writer-historian Joseph Ben Kaifala (Sierra Leone), and poet-scholar Dr Aza Weir-Soley (Jamaica) selected the 2026 fellows from over 300 applicants worldwide. The chosen writers work across a broad range of genres, including fiction, poetry, narrative nonfiction, and academic writing.

The 2026 fellows are:

  • Nana Sandy Achampong (Ghana)
  • Kimberly F. Monroe (USA)
  • Dr Nick Makoha (UK/Uganda)
  • Dr Khadija Koroma (Sierra Leone)
  • Amandla Thomas-Johnson (UK)
