Pfumo Collective

New Pfumo Collective focuses on nonfiction

The Pfumo Collective, a new literary endeavour aimed at producing and promoting creative nonfiction from Africa, has been announced.

Pfumo Collective, a new initiative aimed at the nonfiction space in Africa, has been unveiled in the United Kingdom. Pfumo is “Spear” in the Shona language and the latest enterprise hopes to spearhead access to the mentorship and editorial support that more established literary economies afford. Legendary publisher Ellah Wakatama leads it alongside Billy Kahora, Niki Igbaroola, and Bukola Akinyemi.

Pfumo Citizen Citizen: A Manifesto anthology

They plan to facilitate international engagement with a nonfiction anthology through partnerships with African journals and literary magazines, international literary festivals, and traditional media. This new publication “Citizen: A Manifesto” will explore and interrogate ideas of citizenship and nationhood on the African continent. Those who submit their work will have it assessed by the Pfumo team and those who qualify will attend a fully funded workshop in Accra, a stipend for the writing process, and their travel expenses covered. Applicants must be citizens of an African country and currently reside on the continent.
