African Book Festival Berlin announces 2025 curator

African Book Festival Berlin 2025 starts July 18

The African Book Festival Berlin 2025, with the theme ‘In Other Wor(l)ds,’ will be held in the German capital from July 18 – 20, 2025.

Leading African writers, poets, and thinkers on the continent and in the diaspora have converged on Berlin, Germany, for the African Book Festival since the first edition in 2018. It has quietly become one of the most anticipated literary shindigs centering African narratives in Europe.

The 2025 edition, which is the seventh, is curated by Ivana Akotowaa Ofori and will focus on fantasy, horror, and sci-fi from Ghana and further beyond. Not only will it do justice to genres that are particularly popular with young readers, but also showcase that African authors do create worlds that go far beyond what German readers are used to. Their stories are not only fantastic adventures but also profound commentaries on the past, present, and future of our planet. They offer a captivating alternative to established Western narration styles and provide readers with insights into topics such as post-colonialism, gender, and environmental issues.

Those who attend will be treated to readings, book premieres, music, panel discussions, and interactive formats around the theme at Alte Münze near Alexanderplatz. There will be 16 book clubs from the continent, who have travelled to Germany to take part in the Book Club Special on Sunday.

The featured artists include Ama Asantewa Diaka, Ayesha Harruna Attah, Bea Masala, Cheryl S. Ntumy, Christina Fonthes, Edith Saldanha, Edwige-Renée Dro, Frieder Blume, Georgina Fakunmoju, Helen Nde, Kevin Mwachiro, Lady Phyll, Maame Blue, Mamle Wolo, Moses Leo, Nii Ayikewi Parkes, Niq Mhlongo, Tendai T. L. Huchu, and Zoë Gadegbeku.
