The four recipients of the Morland Writing Scholarships 2025 were announced in London, UK, on Saturday, November 22, 2025.
The Morland Writing Scholarships for African Writers, popularly referred to as the Morland Writing Scholarship, provides financial support so writers can finish a manuscript. In the past, the scholarship has been accorded to writers from across the continent, like Yewande Omotoso, Noo Saro-Wiwa, Ayesha Harruna Attah, Gloria Mwaniga Odari, Hawa Jande Golakai, Nnamdi Oguike, Parsalelo ole Kantai, Muhammad L. Kejera, Neema Komba, Chido Muchemwa, Rafeeat Aliyu, Mubanga Kalimamukwento, Kiprop Kimutai, and Remy Ngamije. Carey Baraka, Fayssal Bensalah, Yvette Ndlovu, and Frances Ogamba were the 2024 recipients.
This year, the jury shortlisted twenty writers from nine African countries on Friday, October 17, after reviewing more than 800 entries. The four selected winners are:
- Adeola Opeyemi (Nigeria) – a developmental and copy editor. She has a BA in English Literature and an MA in Creative Writing from the University of East Anglia.
- Carlo Saio (Kenya) – Saio is a writer and artist, born and raised in Nairobi, Kenya.
- Chinelo Onwualu (Nigeria) – Onwualu is a writer, editor, and recovering journalist. She is a former co-editor of Anathema magazine, co-founder of Omenana, a magazine of African Speculative Fiction, and former chief spokesperson for the African Speculative Fiction Society.
- Monique Eleanor Kwachou (Cameroon) – Kwachou is a writer, youth worker, researcher, and practitioner of gender and education for development.
Each winner will receive a grant of £18,000, enabling them to take a year away from other work to focus on writing their book.
